Let's assume that things in Taksim Square are very bad. (They have not been bad when I have been there -- but let's just assume the worst.) That does not suggest that Istanbul is unsafe or dangerous.
To give you some perspective, I have now run the numbers. Istanbul is a big city. In terms of both area and population, Istanbul is larger than NYC (all 5 boroughs) and LA combined. Combined. The fact that there is unrest, turmoil, and violence (we're assuming this as a fact) in one little park in this mega-city does not mean that the rest of the vast place is unsafe. From what I've seen in almost 48 hours, it appears as safe as any other huge city.
