Diggin' Dubrovnik

I spent today in the Old City part of Dubrovnik.  It is definitely a wonderful place to visit.  The combination of an old medieval city and a dramatic seaside setting -- along with lush green hills in the background -- is tough to beat.

Another great aspect of the day was the hours I spent exploring and drinking Croatian wine with a trial court judge from Phoenix and his wife.  It was a delight to chat and drink with them.

Here are a bunch of pictures from the day.  Can't offer too much commentary now, as I need to get ready for tomorrow's drive south to see Montenegro.

A great view looking down from the top of the old walls
Another stellar view from up on the walls
From very high up on the walls, you can see the unique and uniform approach taken to the roofs in the Old City.

The Dubrovnik synagogue.  There are now 45 Jews in Dubrovnik. Not enough for even a minyan.  Only 4 synagogues remain in Croatia.  Before the Holocaust, there were 45.  There are now about 1,000 Jews in Croatia, and one rabbi.  Most of the Jews, and the rabbi, are in Zagreb.  (This is all based on what the man in the synagogue said.)
The Photography of War Museum has a permanent exhibit about the Serbian War of the  '90s.  There is also a chilling temporary exhibit about the Civil War in the Sudan.  Here are some photos from that exhibit.
